1977 KZ1000 valve check/adjustment was created by A1rider
1st time posting here. Im checking the valves on my kz1000. IS the correct position of the cam lobe (Highest point) should be 180 degrees from the shim/valve when inserting the gauge? With the lobes 180 away only 3 (.003 fits perfect) appear to be in spec. all others are too tight to insert the .002 gauge. If the lobe is say 45 degrees I can fit gauge in (is that the wrong position to check clearance from?) thanks

The factory service manual doesn't say anything about pointing the lobes away from the valve. As a matter of fact , it says to use the marks on the camshaft gears and align them with the top of the head.
That implies to me there are take up ramp spaces in the cam profile that are not taken into consideration by pointing the lobe 180 degrees from the valve.
However, I know a lot of owners do it with the 180 degree anyhow....

I set mine a touch loose. A Climer is a one fits all. Best the have a manual meant for your bike. I have one but ignore most of what it says.
I have one just for the Z1's. All my manuals were stolen by the local Meth heads. I was forwarded this by one of our members.

A1 Rider yes pointing the cam lobe 180 degrees away from the shim should work.
