1978 Kz1000 cam install problem was created by jbrewer73
I went to replace camchain idler dampeners after realizing they were worn while replacing the valve cover gasket.
Bike ran fine prior. Before reinstalling the bracket/sprocket with the 4 bolts I rotated the crank with the 17mm nut with the points cover off to get to exhaust stroke so chain would be loose to be able to install easier. After that couldn't get rotate crank more then half way without coming to a sudden halt. I figured the cam chain got kinked so took off the cams to insure cam chain was fine but when I went to rotate the crank (with no cams or anything, the chain in my hand) it was still going to a certain point than stopping. I seem to have all my components so don't think I dropped anything down there. So when this happened I removed the chain tensioner to see if that had anything to do with it but same result. im afraid to put any more force than I am cuz don't want mess more shit up.

Any ideas woul dbe greatly appreciated. Hoping I don't have to rip into this thing.

thanks

You probably changed the cam timing. Hopefully you didn't bend any valves. It don't take much. Take a piece of bailing wire, make a hook, fish it down there and pull it up. You will have to turn the crank back and forth slightly to free up any kinks, once you have it up, use the wire to hold it by using the frame. Any time I pull the cams, I have a wire hook to hold it.

Thanks for the reply. I have cams out and took chain and wiggled while moving crank back and forth about an inch or so with the 17mm nut to make sure I got all kinks out. Then I tried to see if could rotate crank and still cannot. that's where im stumped. I even made full circle rotating the cam chain around the lower sprocket by hand to insure it wasn't stuck???

Pics? Could a broken piece of guide have fallen in there and wedged between the crank bearing cap?

The cam chain may have jumped off the toothed sprocket on the crank......there is enough room either side between the bearings . It may be that you have to remove the oil pan so you can have a look underneath and see if the cam chain (or anything else) is stuck in there. One other thing to check on is that the cam chain tensioner is not interfering either.

Yes i did.
It rotates full turn then stops at sAme spot everytime. I removed oil pan and used mirror and bendable antenna magnet but nothing. While underneath while on centerstand and rotating i can hear the thud from oil pump/stator side. Dont know if its worth removing starter to see if i could find anything

Yes cams are out, tensioner out and have chain tied up but on crank sprocket.
Chain moves when rotating but cannot figure it out

Something is preventing your crank from turning so check again the chain on the crank sprocket, take off the alternator cover and see if there is anything blocking starting cogs or with the alternator itself, next check the points area.
One other thing.....is the bike in gear? Anything interfering with the drive chain?

Pull the plugs and peer inside. You might have to pull the pan too. The center crank bearing cap can be removed if there's something lodged in it. I doubt it though. I lay the bike over on a block of wood resting on the alternator cover.

I did remove alt cover and inspect gear. Same result in neutral or in gear.
Gonna check drive chain and behind points
Thanks
