stripped crank bolt was created by jonarmstrong
I've got an extra set of cases that have been under my work bench for a while. I was thinking about using them for a build. the other day I was looking at them and found a crank bolt hole stripped. its the outter rear hole on the right side. it's so stripped I can almost turn it through w my fingers. seems like a terrible place for a thread repair unless I just go with an oversized bolt. I could just get a another set of cases. anyone faced a stripped crank bolt before?

Got a pic? could have it filled and rethreaded.

no pics right now. we are at the beach this weekend. can post some tomorrow when I get home. fill with what? I had a cam cap bolt stripped before and I went with a 1/4 sae because it was the smallest oversize drilling I could do. it left me with the option of timesert or helical if 1/4 didn't work

There's not much meat there and you're talking about some heavy strain. I would take it to some who can fill it by welding. Drill and tap it.

Doh! what an awful place to find a stripped thread. Timesert or helicoils have worked for me in the past but this is a very highly stressed area -although timeserts are stronger than the original IIRC. The other thing being there isn't a lot of 'meat' around the crank bolt area so drilling out for a timesert has disadvantages. Weld and retap sounds good but I'd be concerned about possible heat distortion so get a pro on it.

Yup and the weld will be more dense than the surrounding material. Drilling and tapping should be done by a pro.
