i have a 1977 Kawasaki kz1000 and I took the stock air filters off and put separate filters on including the oil breather filter!!! well upon riding again the performance is crappy and the oil breather filter is filling up with oil and spitting it out of the filter. why is it doing this???? and how do I fix it???

The performance is crappy because you have not yet become a carb expert - but you soon will if you plan to ride with pods.  Ed

That's for sure. I know pods look cool but if it is just for looks, it's not worth the trouble. If you can find an old Henry Abe "bread box" filter the work a lot better.

hello people; I'm new. Every time the pod subject comes up the word is to go back to stock. This is probably true and rejetting will make pods work but what about the OP question about the breather filter filling up? Maybe there's too much oil in the engine and I know from bikes past the breather does puke some oil but I nothing about the KZ's and how much does puke,

With what Ive seen with breather filters, even on cars. The filters are for air, and not for oil so once the oil saturates the filter paper/fabric....it ends up saturating it so bad that when there is pressure, it spurts a little out of the filter paper/fabric that is now soaked in oil.

The oily fumes are what build up in the filter.

Oily fumes are blow by! From worn pistons and rings. Do a leak down test and see how much pressure is leaking into the crank case.
So, if you want it fixed! $500 for a over bore wiseco set of forged pistons, $150 for the boring job, Do the head while your at it, $400, $100 for gaskets! Do you love your Kaw enough?? $$$
Try some heavy duty straight, non-detergent SAE 50 or 60 weight oil. As long as you are in warm conditions. That will fix the blow by some. Or STP or Bardahl or some saw dust. Yes guys did this years ago selling used cars!
Blow by is caused by worn pistons and rings! :( :(

The crank case ventilator is just that. It allows the blow by and heat to escape the engine. The drum collects the oil and sends it back to the engine. On KZ's its in front of the filter so it doesn't clog it with oil. If there is too much blow by the engine won't run for SHT anyway.

Right!

For jetting, 20 pilots and 120 mains are a good baseline for VM carbs on a KZ with headers and pods.
