Backfire/Spitting out of carbs

What can cause spitting out of the carbs?
Clinton, NJ

Here are two possibilities.

Insufficient valve clearance, especially the intake valve.

Incorrect ignition timing, or sticking advancer.

It can also be caused by the carbs jetted lean.

My money would be on lean. Is it any better with the choke? Timing could be one tooth off being you just put it back together. I (assume) you got the valves to spec? With those pipes, it would be lean anyway, new valves and higher compression would change things.
