1980 kz750h new exhaust, stop/collars necessary?
08 Apr 2015 19:39
Hey guys. I've got to replace the starter clutch on my kz, and while doing so, I figured I would upgrade to a 4 into 1 exhaust.
Bought a used but nice Vance and Hines from a member here on the forums, and received it today.
A recent post about centerstops got me to realize that the stop wasn't included, nor were any collars...
(It wasn't advertised as included, so no worries there...)
Do I need to order these items?
I've considered removing the center stand all together to clean up the looks of the bike, but I understand its advantages, and didn't want to remove it right away...
I've searched and found some DIY ideas for the center stop, including reusing the stock stop....
Also, the collars that are included with the exhaust when new, are those neccassary? What's the purpose?
I've ordered new copper gaskets, but didn't think about the collars...
Thanks guys.
Chris

If you mean the half-moon exhaust collars, then you'll need to get them as the stock collars are too short for the aftermarket exhaust systems. The stock 750H header pipes have flanges welded onto the ends, whereas the V&H are flared. You might be able to use the collars from a 1980-&-earlier KZ650 --- according to the cross-reference at Partzilla a number of smaller bikes & some modern ATVs used the same collars.

It appears they are also called "split keepers"....
I've seen posts where folks say the included ones with the v&h are too long for the 750, and the reused the stock ones... But martin, your saying the stock are too short?

I've sent z1 an email, hopefullynthey may be able to help me out with the keepers.
Does anyone know if I can use the u shaped threaded rod center stop that people have modified for the 1000s?

Although I haven't installed a 4-1 system, if you're using the stock exhaust holder clamps,
I'm pretty sure you'll need longer collars.
81 650 mufflers -- note the flanges welded to the ends --- the 750-4 is the same

Gaskets. If need be, there are fiber gaskets you might be able use to make up any fitment problems that might arise. I think the fiber gaskets are re-useable once or twice --- in case you have to remove the system for whatever reason. I didn't see an exact match at Z1Enterprises, but there are a couple that are probably close enough.

The stock keepers worked fine on my Z1 and a V/H 4/1. I'd been saving a pair of Susie flanges because I think they are sexy. I put them on in 13 when I got the bike back on the road. The cutout was deeper so I had to make shims out of heavy gauge aluminum wire. I made a circle hammered them flat and they work.

Split collars that came with my V & H 4-1 were too long for proper fitment on my 78 650...had to re-use factory parts...(and yes you will need the "crowns")....I posted a nice set of old school kerker installation instructions in the documents section (They might be helpful, if this is your first time doing it.)
