Exhaust equalizer pipe: running temperature? was created by KzChop82
Does anyone know what the average running temperature is for the stock exhaust connecting equalizer tube is for a ~1000 cc engine?
I'm trying to see if this flexible tubing would be a suitable replacement:
www.mcmaster.com/#55125k74/=wn33vf
It says it's good up to 500 degrees- but I'm not sure what the temps are down under there after a long ride.
Anyone have a laser temp gauge?

I'd be interested in this as well. My pipe is super rusty and at this point, is plugged with so many dabs on high temp sealant so it doesn't leak. Hard to find suitable replacement.

If the temperatures work out- it really will be perfect. The tune has a natural spring to it and it can be taken off AND installed while the #1 and #4 pipes are still bolted to the bike.
And it seals perfectly around the original pipe flange with an ordinary hose clamp.

Is it really necessary? With it gone exhaust mods would be much easier. And on a related note can you switch the headers from side to side thereby moving the ends closer to each other to enable two 2-1 connectors into another 2-1 and out. Or two 2-1s into two separate mufflers.

You might be able to use copper pipe & fittings. Someone here on KZR was able to screw a couple of male fittings into the ports on the muffler manifold, then he installed the stock connector pipe directly over the fittings.

The stock pipes have been altered. I had to bend them at a sharper angle in order to have them sweep right under the engine. After they were bent to the right angles and everything was looking good- the connecting pipe was the only thing that didn't line up.
I wound up splitting my stock connecter and off-setting it by welding it back together.
But it has always leaked like this.
What would be the downside of plugging the exhaust and eliminating this connecting piece??

You might experience a small power loss due to reduced scavenging effect. Ed

I'm interested whether the connector can be eliminated as well. I'm swapping a 78 engine into my 76 kz400 and the 76 engine had the internal balancer. I'm wondering if I can put the 76 headers on the 78 engine without the external balancer/connector.
