I replaced the original exhaust on my KZP with a new 2into1 and they did not have the crossover pipe the original exhaust had. Runs better and more power.

Do you mean a 4-1 or 4-2? Also, did you compare the ID of the pipes? I bet they're larger in diameter. One 2" ID pipe will flow much more air than two 1" ID pipes. I don't know about other models, but the 81 KZ650 pipes are quite narrow just after the connector & if you eliminate the cross-over, the exhaust port size is reduced by half & it will be quite restrictive.

2to1 per side. I was trying to splain the non crossover type but yes its 4into2. I didn't compare the diameter. I jus replaced the shoddy police exhaust that was thrashed. I dunno but i do think that without the crossover it seems better but I have to add that it was bored out to 1075 and rejetted along with Wisco pistons...ydayada

Because I'm trying to find someone who has one- and can take a short ride and then get a temperature reading from the exhaust crossover pipe.

Search "engine temps" ............. Old man rock was getting around 370 degree's at the header pipes so the under neath "should be lower I would think".
On page 2 look for operating temps I think its called ....... you were on it I think a while back.

Ed- no problem.
The piping is good to 500*, so it should be fine.

In fact- got it up to running temp today and it looked fine.

The bike finally lives again!!
Just needs a carb tune.

I don't have anything to measure the temperature on my bike, but I remember from racing that the temperatures didn't get that high. Google found these numbers from cars:

  • 1" from engine 750º F.
  • 2" above header port (on header) 300º F.
  • 1" above floor pan (in car) 165º F.

So unless you make it into a high performance racer, I'd say you should be in the green :woohoo:

Thanks. Aftermarket pipes are typically larger in diameter. I took the earlier comment as meaning the connector pipe isn't necessary on the stock systems.
