okay I think I finally figured it out. once I took it all apart again, I noticed the clutch adjusting screw is in bad shape, so im guessing when I apply pressure it slips threads. im looking to order a new one. I use motorcycle superstore, but does anyone suggest a better website for kz parts?

If it was mine and I thought the clutch adjusting screw was damaged I would buy the screw and the clutch release cam that it threads into in case those threads are also wonky. Partzilla is the place to buy them. See part numbers in diagram below. They have the adjusting screw for $2.10 - see
www.partzilla.com/search/?q=92009-1009&x=25&y=17
and the clutch release cam for $7.55 - see
www.partzilla.com/search/?q=13119-1003&x=19&y=20
