HELP! I just gained ownership over this beautiful 79 kz400. its been riding pretty well, but I recently changed my handlebars without disconnecting the clutch cable. I just pulled it off the cars. now I don't have any pressure on my clutch! the line is still intact, but no pressure. bought that 3/8 ball bearing everyone claimed I lost, but now the case wont go back flush onto the engine. any tips??

I don't really understand "pulled it off the cars".
Do you have a service manual? There is a very specific method of adjusting the clutch cable described therein.

Here's a link to Ivar's site that has a downloadable service manual for your bike.

Sorry for the autocorrect I meant bars. Like handle bars.. I've done all the clutch cable adjusting possible but as soon as I squeeze to engage the clutch, all pressure is lost. Would it be something on the opposite side of the push rod I may have damaged?

Maybe its binding somewhere or maybe,if it was adjusted to work without the ball bearing and youve fitted the ball bearing,it just needs readjusted. Should be main adjustment at the engine case end and fine adjustment by the lever.
Iif theres no pressure at all, theres a good chance the cable has snapped.

okay. I tried that. and when I took the case off and pulled the cable while I compressed the clutch lever, it still pulled. could it still be snapped or unwound somewhere inside the line? I also broke this piece. for some reason my computer wont let me post pics so I could show it visually. so the ball bearing isn't completely necessary?

I don't know about the 400 but most bikes have the ball bearing inside the clutch basket. You may have the clutch maladjusted at the cover.

had purchased the 3/8 bearing that I read up on and it claimed that it needed. once I dropped it into the basket, the sprocket case would no longer line back up. almost like it s not enough space for the push rod and the bearing...ima take my time and tinker with it a little bit longer, bc I HATE shops. hopefully I can stay away. Thans for all the tips as well guys I really appreciate it

Maybe you have two in there now. Run a wire through one side to the other through the push rod hole. Don't give up. One thing at a time.

so is the ball bearing supposed to be sitting on the opposite side of the push rod? I just put it in the hole that's on the back of the linkage that the clutch cable is hooked up to on the other side of the adjusting screw. im supposed to take the pushrod out then drop the ball through there?

Hi Steve,
In order to do that the clutch would have to be disassembled. I'd try a magnet on one of those telescoping wands, that is, if the ball, or balls, won't just roll out by leaning the bike to the left.
