At the end of the summer I was on a ride when my clutch cable slipped out of the lever and I was forced to come to a stop, shifting down clutch-less. I installed a new clutch cable, but the bike wouldn't stay in first or second gear past 2-3000 rpm. It just kept popping back out into neutral. (It doesn't seem to have trouble in the upper 3 gears, however.) After reading some forums it sounded like I needed to replace a bent or broken shift fork. Last night I finally got into the transmission, but, to my eye, the forks all look fine. They certainly didn't look like the examples I had seen online.
Has anyone experienced anything like this before or do you have any thoughts on what the problem could be? Could a fork be bent so slightly as to not be obvious, but still cause so much trouble? Do you think it's more likely that the issue is in the gears or the shift drum itself?
Thanks,
Colin
