1976 kz900 oil pressure
08 Mar 2015 18:28
I bought a 1976 kz900 project last week and I got it cranked up today. I screwed in am oil pressure gauge and at idle it has very low oil pressure. My question is how much pressure did these motors make? I read some where that they were low pressure high volume system around 3 psi, does this sound accurate?

Three-four psi is typical. The bigger Kz's have roller bearing cranks so high pressure isn't really needed.

Your right. They have low oil pressure. I redid my oil pump so when cold I get 20+ psi. It drops down to 3-5 after it warms up. I bought two Doremi low pressure gauges and blew both. Ended up buying a HD Sporster gauge that only went up to 60 psi. The regular ones don't even regester.

While I was into the cases I pulled the oil pump. You had to anyway. You can do it by dropping the pan too. I had three oil pumps. One from a Z2 750. I took all the gears and measured them for play. I used the best housing and took the cover plate to a piece of glass with #600 wet/dry paper. Got all the marks out and used a thinner gasket.
That's it. I didn't expect this much pressure but it is what it is.
