Exhaust valves

Hey Guys,
The GPZ has been down due to the starter clutch. I am working on that now as well as a few other small issues.
I was taking a look down the exhaust port and I noticed a couple of things. One, plenty of deposits around the valve stem. And two, the #4 valve looks a little different.
Here is what 1-3 exhaist valves look like:

Here is #4:

I know the pics are not the best but the #4 valve looks cleaner and a little bit oily. Valve stem maybe? Problem?
The engine is out right now and I was not planning on doing anything other than the starter clutch.

Valve seals. Get Viton ones, lap the valves and ride the piss out of it.

Not to HJ, but... DFIGPZ, are they the seals with the spring at the top, or the band below? Can we get a PIC?

This is what I bought this time around. Springs $68.96 valves $130 Viton seals $25.49.

The spring had never been changed, I could see the intake valves were worn through the spark plug hole, I was fouling plugs and the head showed signs of over heating. I was hoping to gain some adjustment range. I did on the intake and the seat pattern was a little wide but not too much. The exhaust I lost some. The valves were seating on the carbon left by the oil. Lapped in well so I put it together and am riding the piss out of it. The valve train sings like it when new.

Deposits in the exhaust track are perfectly normal If the bike has a header and someone rejetted the carbs on the rich side the carbon will build up faster than desired though. Unless the bike was burning a bunch of oil I wouldn't pull the head. If you did so for other reasons, new valve stem seals should be on the menu of course.

I'd have to agree. if the plugs arn't fouling, no need to tear into the head right now.

The plugs don't foul but it does use some oil (leaks some too).
Does the head have to come off to replace the valve stem seals?
Thanks Everyone
