hi, fellow kzrs, i need to know what crankshaft from kawasaki was put in the 1978kz1000d1(z1r 1000) , the bike i am rebuilding does not have one in the parts i recieved when i bought the bike, what info do i need to make the proper choice for my bottom end needs, i was told the kz1000 engine are the same on the inside, what tooth count and a mm measurement i should be looking for to make sure i get the right one the 1st time, is there any thing to look out for or keep in mind about used or rebuilt crankshafts in general, welding, truing and balancing etc, the bike has andrews cams, oversized piston kit ,all of the parts seem to be there other than the crank. a friend also told me about proper plane bearing installing and measurements, a pro is going to install it , i am looking for help from the guys in the know!!! thank you and i need any info and knowledge and help i can get, mike

Any 1973-1980 900/1000 crank will work. The 900's are a little lighter and have 15T center pins. The early 1000's are 15T but a bit heavier than the 900 cranks. Later (MkII) style cranks are the same weight as the early 1000 cranks but use a bigger 16T center pin and have a larger snout for the stator/starter clutch assembly.

All 1973-1980 900/1000 cranks have roller bearings instead of plain bearings so they are pretty much drop in and go.

I'm sure someone else will respond to confirm/deny my info.

Just make sure you get the right cam sprockets to match the crank you get.15t crank needs 30t on cam,16t crank needs 32t cam sprockets. ;)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

If you want to go with the 78 stator cover, go with the 73-78 crank, if you use the 79-80 mkii crank you have to use the newer stator cover- or have the crank or stator cover modified

my bikes; 80kz1000(project), 77 gl1000, 74 h2 (project)
Past; 78 kz1000, 83 kz550

Ummmmm... Mike, as a Kawasaki DEALER, what does your MaKawi resource tell you? You should have far more resources, at your fingertips, than we have knowledge of orig part info you're looking for.

So, what do your resources tell you?

This is correct. It seems to me, you should count the cam sprocket teeth to find out what crank should be used.

my asking this question of you fellow kz riders is i work in the parts department, not service, our microfisch only show parts #s and has the ability to use (where used icon) in k- dealer for parts used on muliple machines or one machine., our service department employees ,including service manager are in there 30s years or younger, our dealer also has a unwritten rule about working on any machine older than 10-15 years old depending on condition , service decisions are based on services needed and can said machine be repaired in a timely and cost effective way for our customers satifaction and end result and service charges. $80.00 hourly!! ! because you know that when you are attempting to quote service (older machines) you can very easy to open up a can of worms service wise. broken parts, unforseen parts loss and availibilty issues back order issues, added expense to end customer. i checked we dont even have a service manuals for kz style or older bikes, i have to bring mine in when we tinker with my triples or Z stuff. i have ways to ask questions and get answers from kawasaki on service issues like this crank issue ,leaving phone messages or dealer inquiries for our shop and wait for a response, the kzrider forum gives me instant acces and multiple opionoins on a my subject. which is very helpful. by the way i am in my mid 40s ,except for the owner i am the oldest employee!! a he is a hands off owner. he lets the pros do threre jobs without interference ,unless he has too. ALL KZRIDER OPIONIONS ARE WELCOMED, and respected as is our own service departments advise, i recieved a response from kawasaki dealer services about my crank question and the advise was similar to advice i recieved almost instant ,and it didnt take 2 working days until they were able to get me an answer, the dealer services department is very busy everyday and they do there best, that is why i like this forum for its pratical advice and very fast help. this info is just a fyi for you all, thanks mike
