UT head gasket

16 Dec 2014 12:36
#656195
When i had my 1200cc kit made for my KZ1000A the guy insisted that i used a machined UT head gasket instead of Cometic so my question is:
Do you use Spray seal on those gaskets?? or only on the Copper ones?

(If i remember the UT head gasket has somekind of layer?!?!?)

I wouldn't go modifying the UT gasket it's just a normal fibre type and you would end up loosing the sealing ring if you tried to open it up to match the larger bore.
I would use a Cometic graphite one which is made for the job and needs no sealer.
Spray on sealer is used for the solid copper type which also needs your block to be piano wired to prevent it blowing.

Yes now you cant do it on the fiber gaskets...
The UT head gasket that came with it, is a 3 layer aluminium and not fibers as the old A gasket.

Have you any experience with REC-tuning in germany??? have heard only good from people about him and cheaper than Wiseco

All the UT's I've stripped have had fibre head gaskets fitted so maybe they were aftermarket items ? never had a layered aluminium one.
The std UT gasket is two piece though isn't it and I prefer to use a one piece, either a Cometic or copper depending on application as there's less chance of leaks around the cam chain tunnel area.
I have never tried modifying a UT gasket but if I had to and it were aluminium then I see no problem using the spray on sealer.
As for REC Tuning, I have not had any dealings with them so can't comment on their products.
I generally only use MTC or Wiseco for the Z motors.

Dont know whats orig stock - but these are 2 pieces 3 layer - will go for the spraying - other wise i have a Cometic from my Wiseco kit!!
But dont you need to fill out the long o-ring hole when using a 1 piece gasket?? thats how it is on the Wiseco kit.....

Know the MTC are very good pistons but was to much trouble and expensive to order them from the states
Denmark you ad 35-40% on everything you import from outside europe :-(

You should try him - cheaper than Wiseco (my Wiseco prices) and you order the bore and compression you need so if you have a 1200 bore that needs new pistons he can make them... also lighter than Wiseco etc etc
Will give you a review when running :-)

Yes! Just fill it with RTV silicone and slice it flush with a razor blade once set.

Piano Wiring.
A thin groove is machined around the top of the liners gasket face into which a thin gauge steel wire is pressed.
The wire is left proud so it bites into the copper head gasket when bolted down to provide a better gas tight seal.
You may be able to see the wire in this picture taken from my Drag bike build thread.
