Bought new valve cover gasket and am checking the valves while I have it off. first one was right on at .05mm according to manual. the rest are all tight, as in cant get a .04mm gauge in there and that is the smallest gauge I have. Whats the problems im facing with the valves to tight?

Do a search for batwing, which should produce some informative threads.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYou have to buy the shims any, the tool is cheap.

Do you have a service manual. It tells you how to figure out the shims needed based on what size you have and +/- space at the shim. What year and model to you have?

I couldn't bring myself to spend $8 + $7 for shipping for a bent screwdriver and a flat piece of metal. If I had been purchasing something else at the time, then no problem with $8. Kind of hard to figure out what shims you need if you have some no gap situations. Made my own batwing tool from 0.125" aluminum and used a plain old flat screwdriver. Works perfectly. Suggest diagramming the shims and gaps by location, then look up the new shims on the chart and write them on the diagram. You'll probably be able to move a shim or two to new locations. I adjusted 6 valves but only bought 3 shims.

82 1000 ltd. I was wondering if it wouldn't be easier to pull the cam holders off to get the shims out just to figure out which ones I need?

Make sure you have some calipers so you can mic the shim thickness. Some have the number rubbed off and some are marked off.

Some shops did it that way. It takes longer to keep R+R the camshafts, but the real danger is how easy it is to strip the cam cap bolts from repeated going in and out.
