Question on kerker install, 83 kz750L3 was created by stilkikin
My used ebay kerker just came in. I did not get any mounting hardware with it. I went to install the thing and to my suprise the split collars are now not long enough due to the design of the headpipe. I have a lot of play in the pipe and there is no way it will seal like this. Is there a special set of split collars available for this install? I was expecting it to bolt right up, I should have known better. Nothing EVER bolts right up...

You may want to contact SuperTrapp to see where you can buy the split collars. SuperTrapp owns Kerker. Ed

Thanks guys, I just contacted Supertrapp and am waiting for an answer. I read on their forums though that it's not available. I contacted the ebay seller as well to see if he has them.

There is an easy 1/2" gap. I beleive I read the kerker ones are 1.25". There is no way doubling the crush washers will work, It would be nice though if it would.

Looking on ebay the kz or gpz 550 collars look about the same length. Does anyone know the diameter of the 550 pipes so I can compare?

My new V&H came with longer than stock split collars...was told by a memeber here that my studs aren't going to be long enough..(Jeff S. at Z1E disputed that, however! ) I'm not ready to put them on yet, but hopefully SOME things simply "bolt on"( for ALL of us, LOL!)

Check out the 1977/1978 KZ650B, or C model split collars to see how long they are. Those were pretty long split collars compared to the ones on your late model. I am doing this from memory, and have not checked any parts diagrams yet.

I don't have any idea whether V&H and Kerker would use the same basic dimensions, but from having seen the Factory 650 -vs- V&H split collars fairly recently I would say the factory ones are about 3/4" shorter than V&H...If it will help. I can measure the two and report back...

They measure 1.25"! I think they'll work. I'll report back later.

The good: They fit perfect.
The bad: I have gorilla arms, and a broken exhaust stud now.

My understanding is that the thickness of the pipe's end flange against the gasket may vary slightly depending on the particular exhaust system at hand.

For example, the stock exhaust may have a slightly thicker flange than a V&H, whereby the slightly thinner flange would require a commensurately longer split collar.

But the extra length would only be the difference in flange thickness (a very slight amount).

Good Fortune! :)
