I had mine mounted out the side with a long hose that went as vertical as possible and then back down. When I redid the bike I eliminated the long hose but I think I will put it back. Seem to geta bit of oil mist after a hard ride without the longer hose.

I used to use a K&N crankcase breather like that when I used pods. I found that over time they would get wet and start to rust. They look nice but the hose is the lower maintenance option

I've touched so many kawis through out the years I'm probably wrong and off subject.. Old timers 40+ with over 10 kawis..

On the top end I opened up the butterfly's cleaned the carbon and connected both with one hose and a t fitting and a small filter similar to the crankcase to equalize

I hated the long hose felt and looked like a garden hose.. Also seemed too big and too long to actually pull air from the compression decompression cycles to the air box..

Ran with the pods two years ago. It was fun, but I'm back with the air box for now.
The breather cover hole was bored for the .5" diameter filter tube to friction-fit inside, thus preventing oil from escaping while draining back to the motor.
Spring is getting closer!!!
