clutch cable/ pin was created by CafeKid
Just replacing a broken clutch cable. Does this look normal?

When i install the side cover the cable has a ton of loose play, almost like the clutch isn't engaging? Thanks for thelp

You will need to adjust the cable and at the engine.

On my KZ1000 the mid-cable adjustment is screwed all the way in. The handlebar adjustment is screwed about an 1/8 to 1/4" out. Then the engine adjustment is screwed in until there is no slack, then backed out a half turn if I remember right. Once the engine adjustment is finalized then take all the slack out of the cable at the midway adjuster on the cable. Then fine tune it at the clutch lever adjustment.

It's best to consult your manual as there are differences.

If you pulled the clutch rod all the way out, make sure the single ball bearing didn't roll and fall out or there will be slack. It needs that ball bearing in there if it was equipped with one.

Like sbc1320 says there are a series of adjustments necessary before everything becomes just right.
You should be able to find the full and correct procedure in the manual/technical stuff at www . kz400.com
Everything looks normal in your youtube video. The clutch pushrod is easy to pull out and push in like you did. However I am always a bit wary of doing that as some (maybe all) models have a ball bearing at the clutch end of that rod and pulling out the rod may allow the ball bearing to drop out of place

Good luck
