I finally got my 1982 gpz1100 running again after 8 years. When it started up, there is tapping coming from #3 intake valve, when I was putting the cams in after replacing the head gasket, I noticed that this bucket wasn't returning right away. I tried seafoam and engine flush, thinking that something might be gummed up but the noise is still there. When I was putting it together, I thought it just needed some lube on the bucket and once It got running, it would free up. Please let me know. I would like to get it back on the road this upcoming year but I am not inclined to do anything as long as it is tapping.

My first inclination is not something you want to hear.

There are really only two things (in my limited experience) it could be:

1) You have a bad valve guide
2) You have a bent valve stem.

Now, I could be completely wrong and it could be something simple, but that's my first thought. Unfortunately, the fix for either of these is the same - pull the head, pull the valve and check the valve and guide.

Now, if the tick is a leak, you can try a couple of things to fix that, including double-checking the valve lash, but if you've seen the valve bucket coming up slow (by eye), then I doubt it's going to be something cheap or easy.

Valve stem is either gummed up with varnish or a bent valve as stated, possibly even a broken valve spring. You do not want to turn a motor over that has a stuck valve in it without cleaning the valve stem first. If not cleaned first then may very well be fixing a bent valve next.

1980 KZ1000 LTD-B4(MK II engine) - Progressive suspension, MTC pistons, Dynojet Stage III, all wear items replaced, WFO paint scheme(1978), etc..

Past bikes- 2 1976 Kz900's, 5 1975-76 Honda CB750's, Honda 500 -4, Honda 250, Honda 125, Honda 100, Suzuki RM 250, Honda XL350, Kawasaki KLR 650, etc..

Totally what he said!

If the valve is sticking open and you run the engine, you could easily bend the face of the valve by impacting the piston. Regardless what the problem is, you do NOT want to run this engine until you figure this out.

Well, I guess, I know what I will be doing this winter... I was hoping to avoid taking the head off. the last time I took it off, I ended up not getting it running again for 8 years. shouldn't be as bad this time though, with the practice. Any suggestions for when I take it off?

line all your timing marks up before you puill it apart and take pictures of the relationship of the marks to reference on re-assembly.

Get every new OEM gasket ahead of time, and set your mind to accomplish the job in two completely dedicated days of diligent and uninterrupted effort. Do it right, take your time with each step, and leave the beer in the frig until the last bolt has been properly tightened.
On the third day raise the glass, and make several toasts to a mission accomplished... :woohoo:

While, I have it apart should I do the valve seals on the other valves or just leave sleeping dogs lie? I am thinking, that I will get new springs, seal, valve, guide, keep seat and retainer. I can always cache them for future projects. Any other maintenance I should do while I have it torn apart?

Just do it, and have Viton valve seals installed. Make it ten years before next time. :)

If you are going to remove the one valve might as well remove all of them and replace the valve seals. Before you remove the valves however test them for leaks. With the head on the work bench and cams out spray brake cleaner into the intake and exhaust tracs. If you have a leak then lap the valves too.
This cost very little money but takes more patience than anything else.
