So my bike (1979 KZ 1000 LTD, with an MKII engine) was running well but just to be on the safe side I took the valve cover off to check the valve clearances. Most of my exhaust valves are at 0.05mm (one is slightly below, but can't measure for sure), the intake valves are in the 0.1-0.15mm range. Here my questions:
Is this an acceptable range or do I need to do anything about it?
If I need to change shims, do I need to remove the cam and do I need a special tool to hold down the valves?
Bonus question :) How can I tell whether the cam is aftermarket or original?

Thanks a lot for any input!
Olaf

Sounds like the EX valve is to tight, and its good you are checking. Better to run the EX a bit looser, .10mm = .004"

.05mm is pretty much the minimum that can be run, so that one valve should be adjusted by one or two sizes down to get back to .10-.15mm. The job is easy if you have the holder tool to hold the valve open, see what shim is in there and determine what you need. No need to remove cams on the KZ1000, but you need the holder tool. Used to be a factory Kawasaki tool, now I think Motion Pro sells it, but not sure about that

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Yes, the exhaust valves are too tight. Try to keep them at .15mm. Z1 Ent. has the hold down tool for less then $10. No need to remove the cams to change shims. Some aftermarket cams have lnfo stamped on the ends. Measure the hight of lobe and compair it to the stock numbers.

Great, thanks! Will get the shim tool, shims and get going. Too bad I need to place two orders, one for the tool, then after I know which shims I need another one for the shims...

When you get the shim tool make sure you write down somewhere what shims you finally end up with as well as the gap you set so next time will be a lot easier. Also by doing some juggling you may need to buy fewer shims. One thing I would suggest also is to get a metric feeler gauge set (NAPA sells them for about $12) You will use them a lot. ;)

Makes sense. And I have the metric feelers already, definitely makes things easier.
Again, thanks.
