Frozen engine
14 Sep 2013 21:32
My 1976 KZ750 B1 was in a flood. I drained the water out and put some oil in and it turned over just fine with the kick start. Then we went on vacation for a few weeks and when I returned it was frozen ( won't turn over ) I tried several things oil in cylinder, Fuel oil Mystery oil a little heat ( don't want to warp the heads).
Should I take out the motor put it on a bench and tear it down.
I am a vet with some health problems and would like to get this back on the road. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all...thanks for your service.....sorry for your trouble. Floods suck and we can feel your pain. Hope you get it behind you fast and get back to normal.
If its was mine and I could justify the teardown and rebuild costs....and bike was worth it, I would rebuild.
Sounds like you have a rusted up engine. It needs to be gone though, cleaned and some new parts and gaskets should get you up and rolling.
Good luck.

The piston rings may have rusted to the cylinder walls.

Donahue, how long was it stood ? i ask because if not stood long then you may be able to free it up with diesel or a rust penetrant. Rust takes awhile before it can pit the bore

It stood about a year after i Put oil in it At the time I drained out the water and oil and put new oil in it and with the kick start it turned over fine. I am having electrical problems as well. The bike was full of river silt. most of that is gone. the rusting occurred when we went on vacation for two weeks last spring.

What makes you think it stopped rusting when you returned from vacation?

Sounds like teardown time. If it is rusty in the cylinder and you get it freed up the rings will act like scrapers and then they will become stuck with the rust and crud.
Better to tear it down and hone it and rering it. Good luck with it.
What was the name of that song? Oh yeah "Rust never sleeps"

Hay Man,
Thanks from me too,
Now onto the bike,
They are right, rust never sleeps,
So spray whatever you can get your hands on into the plug holes NOW !!
WD 40, PB Blaster ,CRC 5-56 anything.
It will help when you have to pull the cyl. off.
Fighting with 4 frozen pistons all at the same time is NO fun.
Good luck with it.

I hate rusted cylinders! Usually letting the cylinder soak in oil and rocking the bike back and forth with it in gear will free up the stuck cylinder(s). This at least makes disassembly easier.
I don't want any excuses about not being able to get a piston out unless it looks like this! :pinch:

Don't feel bad about that.....most old barn finds are bikes that just got put away after summer and never rode again.
I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.
