If you're trying to modify the sound level, and if the V&H has a removable baffle, you might be able to pull it out and modify / test it a little at a time until you get the sound you want.
If the goal isn't really sound related as much as preferring a shorter muffler cutting it might be the only option. If you cut it can the baffle also be shortened so it can still be used to keep the neighbors from going to war?

1980 KZ1000 LTD-B4(MK II engine) - Progressive suspension, MTC pistons, Dynojet Stage III, all wear items replaced, WFO paint scheme(1978), etc..

The standard baffle may usually be removed and replaced with a competition baffle.
It may be more difficult to remove the existing baffle where it's been fitted long enough to become encrusted in position.
