I.D this part

so i pulled my oil pan last night because i need to helicoil the drain plug. when i pulled it off i found this in my oil pan. looks like some sort of a guide im not to happy about it because i really dont want to pull the motor and crack the case. :evil: I.D THIS PART!

I'm guessing its the front cam chain guide. Did that come out of your oil plug when changing oil?

Anyway looks like a piece of cam chain guide.

Yep...looks like a portion of a cam chain guide. These cam adjusters get brittle with age and sometimes disintegrate. This will entail a top-end tear-down to replace the guides...with the proper tools, not an insurmountable task for you...buy the shop manual (Kawasaki genuine factory manual) if you don't already have it. Since you'll have the cylinder head off...there are a number of other things you ought to be looking at too (cam chain stretch, cylinder bore measurements, replacing valve guide seals, lapping valves, etc.). BTW, all the above can be done with the motor in place

since you did not list model of bike , I'm guessing cam chain tensioner or valve cover cam chain guide ......... :blink: :huh:

damn, it does look like the guide. well here we go. will this require me to just remove the cylinder head or remove the cylinders as well? the guide was found in my pan when i removed it. the modle is a 82 kz750E, a cafe project i was looking to have running is a week or so. very un please at the momment, at least i will be able to run though the engine and make sure all will run smoothly. any other suggestions on what to check out/ replace while i have it all apart? i appericate the help guys!-Eric

as already stated i would check the cam chain for stretch and the cylinders for wear. I would lap the valves and new valve guide seals. I would check or if it was me id replace all the idlers and rubber guides. If the one is that bad you will probably find more wore rubber parts. It would be a excellent time to make any valve shim adjustments. I would measure before you take it apart, so you know what shims will needed changed out. Also it would be a good time to inspect and if needed replace all rubber parts like carb intake manifold boots, spark plug wires/boots, if money allows, id also go thru the carbs while there off, if you havent already. I know its not in the motor but Be sure to inspect your tires for weather cracking also. Old tires are no joking matter on motorcycles.
