Kz750 con rod/crank install
29 May 2013 20:50
I am in the middle of rebuilding the bottom end of this 81 kz750E2 I picked up for cheap and i have a few questions about reassembly. I have already looked through the Factory service manuals for kz650/750/gpz750 to see if i can find answers to these questions but low and behold I am coming up blank.
First, All tolerances on my crank and main/case bearings are well within spec. I was getting ready to rein stall the con rods on the crank when I realized I did not mark for direction, only location of each on rod on the crank. So the con rods have "japan 202" on one side of the neck and "s-46" on the other side. Which side should which marks be facing?
Second, Crank oil seals for this bike are available, according to mama kaw, only for the right side of the crank but not the left. However a later( i think 84 or 85) gpz750 diagram showed the right seal to be available. Since the cranks are essentially the same, shouldn't the crank seals be interchangeable.
Lastly, I am planning on dropping a wiseco 810 kit in this 750 and was wondering what peoples opinions are on running stock cylinder studs? or will I need to get some of the APE studs?
Thanks for your feedback!

The rods are non directional, just put them all on the same way (seems like a good idea, don't have to though).
I bought a complete set (only available individually) of KZ750 seals from Ron Ayers and never used them. I think thy were ~$25 plus shipping for all.
APE studs would be nice, I don't think they're required for an 810 unless you are using a power adder (turbo, nitrous, etc)
I'll go to the parts diagrams and look, but I don't think there is a left side crank seal.
:EDIT:
I was wrong, it does use a left side seal, 92050-080, but they are no longer available.
Right side seal, 92050-081, is still available.

Perfect! thanks for the info and I will have to take a look at the crank seals to see if they are still good especially if the left is out of production.

Unless you really want to,you don't really have to change out the studs for the 810 kit.I have been running an 810 kit for about 5 years, and can still pull 8,000 thru the gears.I haven't had a problem yet.
