If you have a Kz650 with a cable driven tach, I would recommend that you pull the tach drive housing, and gear. If you don't wiggle the tach drive gear back and forth while you are tightening the exhaust cam down. You might bend the tach drive gear, or worse chip a piece out of the worm gear teeth on the cam. I would rather pull the tach drive out of head than take the chance of hurting those parts because you forgot the wiggle the tach drive gear as you tighten the cam down.

I sold plenty of those tach drive gears over the years. I have seen a few smashed or broken worm gear teeth on cams too!! I would replace the oil seal, and o-ring in the tach drive housing too. Thats the most common source of oil leaks on all Kz four cylinders back then. That little tach drive gear is like 35 bucks now if you bend it!!! If I remember right the tach drive seal is part number 92050-075. Good Luck, and just take your time putting the cams back in.

Ok, I'm an idiot. When I pulled off the bucket, the shim was stuck to the bottom and I didn't realize it. I thought that the end of the valve WAS the shim, that's what it looked like in the diagram and that's why I couldn't remove it. Lol
