Compression numbers????
09 Apr 2013 18:59 - 09 Apr 2013 19:53
Hello again,
I'm still bored as my parts haven't come in yet.
I did a compression test on my '79 KZ1000E-1 ST 34'000kms or 20'000miles. Keep in mind this engine was started once the other day since it sat since 2002, then I took my carbs off and have been waiting impatiently for my parts. I took them first dry then after adding a teaspoon of engine oil in each cylinder.
#1-128lbs dry 150 after adding oil
#2-115lbs 130
#3-118lbs 130
#4-130lbs 165
I'm waiting for my manual as well.
Are these numbers acceptable considering the long time setting? Will it run decent with these numbers?
I know I'm going to have to redo at least the top end in the future.
Thanks
Additional note. Numbers were taken with carbs off bike. All spark plugs removed and engine cold around 34 degrees F.

Yes it should start and run ok with those numbers. After it gets run for a bit you should see an increase and some of those numbers may stabilize and be consistent with each other.

Have you adjusted the valves yet? If not then you'll probably get a big boost in compression after doing so.

No I haven't taken the cover off to look at the valve clearance yet. I'm trying to decide if I should order a gasket and end caps before or after. If I wait till after I could order the shims I need. I really hate waiting for parts. I ordered parts from 4 different stores on e-bay on the 22nd of march and have so far only gotten one item.
