1979 kz1000 st exhaust flange installation
26 Feb 2013 12:14
I just purchased a new set of oem (looks just like the factory installed flanges) exhaust flanges for my kz1000st. The factory exhaust and flanges had been removed prior to my purchasing the bike. According to the guys at z1, the flanges in the set are two for the right side and two for the left side of the exhaust.
My question is...how do I know which two are for the left side and which two flanges are for the right side. And/or, which direction/orientation should I install the flanges? They look pretty identical to me.
Thanks much,
Bonzeyt

With sunburst style exhaust clamps, the lower fin areas fit adjacent to the frame down-tubes.
When installing the exhaust header pipes, this makes it easier to slide the clamps past the frame.
This will likely become self-evident during the process of installing the header pipes.
Good Fortune!

Thanks. The new flanges have a number on the front of each one. They are numbered 1 thru 4. I assume the numbers match the number of the cylinder that the flange should be connected to. Can you tell me which port of the exhaust is exhaust port 1 or port 4? This will help me match the flange to the correct location.
Thanks,

As you sit on the bike's seat, #1 will be on the far left, followed by #2,#3 and #4, left to right.
Any other exhaust related questions?

Don't know if the numbers mean anything or not, but I would doubt they would mark them 1-4 as 1-2 are same and 3-4 are same. As Patton said, they can only go one way, the flattened side will clear the frame when installed correctly, if not installed correctly, then the flattened side will be opposite of the frame. Hopefully these are factory Kawasaki parts we are speaking of, if aftermarket who knows what Chinese engineering has gone in and most likely the self explanatory of the factory piece is long gone.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
