Clutch problem was created by stewtam
Hi everyone I have a kz900a4.I am having problems with my clutch. When i come to a stop and have the clutch pulled the bike will keep pulling.I have replaced the cable, and plates both metal and fiber, and i have adjusted the clutch cable as the manual tells me to.Not sure what else to do.I think maybe the push rod maybe worn.Does anyone know the exact measurement of a new clutch push rod or have any other ideas for me.Please help.

When you reassembled the clutch did you make sure the little ball bearing was in there? I cannot imagine the rod being short; if it was the adjuster screw would make up for it. Try adjusting the clutch again. It sounds like the adjuster screw at the rod may be a bit too loose or not enough slack is adjusted out of the cable. Also, what motor oil are you using? Ed

Hi Ed

Thanks for your quick response to my question. I have removed the ball bearing and inspected it and replaced it. I have adjusted the clutch adjusting screw and cable many, many times and I am getting the same results. The motor oil is GN4 SAE 10W-40SJ. Do you think possible a different type of oil?

Thanks Again
Stewart

A little back ground info, Please. did you have this problem before you replaced the clutch? using an aftermarket or oem clutch fibers /steels? same number of plates installed as removed? :S did you soak the new clutch fibers in oil overnight before installing? New versus old fiber /steel thickness? :pinch:

Is the assembly in the cover assembled correctly. So the Worm gear is on the correct spline? Lever should be at 90 degree to the mounting holes. Then adjusted correctly, before cable is adjusted.

I did not have this poblem before putting in clutch, sorry for lack of info.I put new after market fiber plates in with the same old steel plates, steel plates looked good not warped.I counted all plates and replaced the same amount, did not soak fiber plates over night just rubed oil on them.

I wouldn't think the oil itself would be the problem, but car oil marked "Energy Conserving" has friction modifiers that are not good for wet clutches. Your safest bet for oil is to use oil that has "JASO-MA" marked on the container. If you look up JASO-MA on the web you'll see the what I mean. One other thought - did you torque the clutch springs to the recommended settings? If you overtightened them that could be contributing to the problem. Ed

 after market clutch's. They never really worked well for me  the fiber disc tangs slide freely in the basket ? They are not hanging up anywhere?
try each fiber without any steels and make sure it does not hang up and slides all the way to the back of the basket........ lay all steels one by one, on a glass plate to make sure they are flat......... any blueing on the steels, this is a street bike ,correct?

:S Rare but I've seen after market fiber disc thickness vary from one side to the other from poor manufacturing control causing dragging of the fibers .....

IMO. You should of soaked your fibers overnight so they can soak up the oil.......rubbing oil on them doesn't get it.... :)
