mount the swingarm and rear wheel with the rear sprocket you plan to use.
then use a straightedge, string, laser etc. to project from the backside of the rear sprocket forward and with a stock countershaft sprocket on the engine.you measure from the back of the stock countershaft sprocket to the straight line and that is your offset.

i like to measure from the backside if i am using a 630 front and a 530/525/520 rear.so the difference in width doesn't skew the measurement.

like this,

with the red in the back being the offset.

or to show it a different way,

Could be misinterpreting, but thinking that a 630 chain requires a 630 sprocket, front and rear.
And a 630's 3/4" pitch won't fit a shorter pitch sprocket such as 530/525/520.

As to width, 525/520 chain usually won't fit onto a 530 sprocket, because the 530 sprocket is too wide.

The best practice, imo, is to match chain width size with sprocket width size, to avoid a sloppy fit where the chain width is wider than the sprocket width.

Good Fortune! :)

whoa patton!

we are talking offset front counter shaft sprocket here.
we have a wider wheel than stock and are figuring out the front (countershaft sprocket)offset.

no matter the pitch(630/530/525/520) the back side of the countershaft sprocket (the side towards the engine) is always going to be located in the same place.
while the front(the side away from the engine) may vary depending on the sprocket thickness.
that is why you should measure from the back sides of the front and rear sprockets, they always register in the same place no matter what the sprocket thickness is.

I think Patton might as well be the complete motorcycle encyclopedia haha. dude you've probably forgot more than Ill ever know. Ok so i measured for offset today and I'm right at 3/4". not good... I already know that 5/8" is about the max you wanna run. could I get away with the difference and run the 5/8"? should I but one of those outer bearing braces (even though it hurts my eyes)? should I have a machine shop shorten the rear sprocket hub? it has those perches and i could prob get a 1/4". and even in the end, it looks like I'm gonna have to notch the frame. someone talk me off the ledge

you can machine the cush drive off,you do need the www.pmfronline.com/out_board_bearing_support.php
running that much offset.
on a mildly ridden street bike you could probably get away with a 5/8's offset without the bearing support,if you didn't launch it hard or let it hook real hard.
you stand the chance of breaking the output shaft because of the extra leverage of the offset countershaft sprocket,is the deal.

the frame notch and some cush drive machining could probably get you all the room you need.

hth,
the windows open, comon back in  .
watch your step :P .

haha thanks for grabbing my collar Leon, I wonder if I could somehow hide that brace under the stock cover. Im not a huge fan of that look. maybe I could somehow shift the swinger to the right a tad and machine some off the cush drive, and between the 2 get somewhere closer to a 1/2" offset.

might be easier to slide the wheel over.
would have to machine the caliper bracket down prolly and machine some new thicker spacers for the other side.
