hey guys, I'm fairly new to the whole "chain drive" concept. ive only had beltys. anyway, my question pertains mostly to the sizes. I know ill need some sort of offset but ill play with that later. I wanna keep somewhat factory gearing maybe a few less teeth for highway riding. same with chains... Im assuming theres a superior brand? o-ring or non? any help would be excellent!! thanks dudes

Pick up an o-ring or x-ring chain. D.I.D. makes a quality chain, and there are a couple other good brands. Keep it lubed with quality chain lube every 3 - 400 miles; I use Maxim Chain Wax and it works very well. Ed

Dave,
any of the japanese brands did,ek,rk are quality chains 520 is the narrowest 525/530 is also a popular pitch chain to use on these conversions.

i have used 520 pitch ever since i put a 190/200 mm rear on my bike and have no regrets.

it seems to be easier to find offset sprockets in 525/530.

i have my rear spockets custom made by

pmpsprockets.com/

i custom fab my own offset front sprockets.

sweet ya i was just up at the dealership to see what was on new stuff. 525 seems to be the way to go. leon, why do you have custom rear sprockets made? just for looks? or do they serve a purpose?

I'm surprised at the lightweight (520 & 525) chains for a KZ1000. My KZ650 uses a 530 chain. Ed

dave,
i have a 2000 r1 rear wheel and it seems there are not many guys that run 38 tooth rear sprockets on r1's .
pmpsprockets.com/ will custom build me one for about the same cost as an off the shelf one and have it to me quick.

chain technology has advanced in 520/525/530 chains a BUNCH since the 80's.
that is the reason ed's 650 is sold new with a 530 and bmw's s1000rr is sold new with a 525.

if i 525 wasn't up to the job of holding 180 rwhp with a 190mm rear tire hookin it to the pavemement, bmw would not be selling it on a new street bike.

I found a cool lookin gold/black chain from did that I think would accentuate the 636 front nicely. I guess I have to put some sprockets on it and figure out what length I need . Are rear sprockets universal? Or do I need an r6 specific sprocket?

color co-ordinated chain  .

you need the specific sprocket to fit whatever wheel that you are going to use.
some of them will interchange.
but,if you do not know for sure make sure to get the one advertised to fit your wheel.

putting the sprockets on and measuring is the best way to find the chain length that you need.

string is your friend  ,

Regarding the BMW K46 chains - That is amazing. They must have also made significant improvements in the sprocket alloy too or those probably wouldn't last as long as the chain on a bike with that much power. Ed

so apparently the r6s uses a 520 chain, so I have to get one made if i wanna run 525... another side question, are the drive sprockets somewhat universal? or will I have to get a kz1000 specific sprocket for 525 chain.

i run 520 chain on my z1r no sweat.

some engines have the same spline on the output shaft as the kz but if you don't know for sure if it fits you are better off buying something that is advertised to fit your bike.

you are going to need a off set countershaft sprocket.

so you really need to get a rear sprocket to fit your wheel in the tooth count you want, and bolt it all up and then using string/laser/straight edge etc.... you need to measure to see what offset you are going to need on your countershaft sprocket.
