Small Leak Tach Drive Gear

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI have a small leak coming from the tach drive gear. I went to take the cable off and the thightening nut broke, so now I need to get a new cable (got one ordered). It appears as if the leak is not from the outer o-ring on the drive gear, but from the inside. Is this the correct seal to get:

Hi Alpamer, not sure if that is the correct one, you would have to match the number based on what the parts manual says. People here will confirm it for you. But for the price why not consider this from Z1Enterprises - Click Here. Once again, please confirm that this is the correct one for your model. You can always call them and give them your VIN and they will confirm.

To do the job right you should replace parts 13, 15, and 16 in the diagram below. All three are still active parts, so any Kawasaki dealer or Z1E can get them for you. I did mine 10,000 miles ago and it hasn't leaked a single drop since. Ed

For reference as to installing the new seal --
Click > www.kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/558813-in...in-tach-drive#558813

The old seal may be encrusted into the tach drive housing.
It's important to get all of the old seal removed.
May entail picking it out bit by bit, with the help of a good light and magnification.
A dental pic or similar tool may be helpful.

Good Fortune! :)

I just got the new seals, but I ran into a bit of a problem. I picked the old main seal out...as much as I could since it was baked in there...and it appears there is a retainer ring (see photo). I also just got my shop manual but can't find anything on the tach drive gear. It looks like I have to remove that ring in order to insert the new seal. Any ideas?

To me it doesn't look like you have removed the seal from the tachometer gear drive yet. The parts should look like the pic below before you assemble:

i think the out seal has ring/spring pressed into a groove in the taller rubber seal...yours being baked it stayed in the recess right...sharp tiny screwdriver....dental pick...freeze it for a few hours???

hay guys is there any way to order just the outer cheap (like 5 bucks ) seal and use some viton or decent orings inside, and not have to buy the metal drive housing...all the seal "kits" show the metal bolted piece and are 30-40 bucks?...does the metal part wear out too...am i being cheap here...mine leaks on everywhere...makes it look like my head is leaking...gets on the pipe...time to fix

Well, that retainer ring was actually part of the seal. I pried it out and put the new seal in without problems.

I got everything installed and when I went to put in the new tach cable...freaggin' heck, the nut cracked again. Last time it cracked when I went to loosen it, now when I was tightening it. I didn't realized they were so fragile. I was tightening it with pliers, and it looks like it should only be by hand. The new cable I ordered was NOS. Now I have two perfectly good tach cables without the nuts that tighten them to the drive gear. What a waste.

No, I bought just the three seals, and the cable separately. Now I need to order another cable :(

I think I'll hand tighten with some blue thread lock.
