1980 LTD transmission was created by mtbspeedfreak
Was there anything special about the 1980 LTD transmission? I recently saw a bike for sale , and the ad points out that the transmission is not the correct '76 KZ900 tranny, but one from a 1980 LTD. Any difference in gearing or robustness?

2000 ZRX 1100
1976 KZ 900- Daily Driver
1980 LTD 550- Dalton Highway survivor!

If it has tits or tires, it'll give you problems!

The 1980 LTS trans is the same as a MK11 which is supposed to have a bigger second gear set. Same as a regular KZ1000 trans except the second gear set is supposed to be .030 wider. Know of some super.comp bikes running in the 8's using this trans. so should be strong enough for any street bike. Second gear was always the weak point in a KZ trans and this was done to fix that problem. Was told you can tell by looking for a "ring" around second gear but not sure about that part. I was always told a MK11 or one of these trans was the best KZ trans. Next step up would be a J model trans. and then the 83-84 GPZ trans which both require some mods to use in a KZ case.

1980 LTD (changed over the years), 1979 LTD (being rebuilt), 1977 KZ turbo and various KZ's in various states of build. KLX110

Thats correct you can see the "step" on the top of the gear. Unlike the other which are just a flat gear.
