If you want to re-use the chain and if it is an O-ring chain then no, do not use brake cleaner it will melt the rubber o-rings

LiquidWrench chain lube is cheap, so the method doesn't waste pricy lubricant. hee.
Sometimes I use a clean cloth dampened in mineral spirits.

Glad to see everything worked out!!!
Beware the tankslapper, I have yet to have an at speed accident, but speed-wobble is best for bicyclists and skateboarders than a 60 mph motorcycle.
