kz750 starter grind? was created by andyvr4
Ok thank you ahead of time for responses. Also I have been searching for my issue and thought it was my starter clutch but now I feel its not. Ok my starter sounds like its missing and grinding but no teeth wear, also clymers repair manual says if I can turn the gear toward the front of the bike it should spin freely, and when turning to the rear it should not turn at all by hand and by that test it is supposed to be good. So I'm stumped. Any thoughts?

Welcome aboard! It would help much if you put your bike's year and model in your signature line. There are 2 cylinder and 4 cylinder KZ750 models and the starters are quite different. Ed

Hello, andyvr4, and WELCOME to KZrider forum! :cheer:

Including information about bike year and model is helpful to viewers and usually elicits better responses.
It's easy to put the information in your signature where it shows in all posted messages, past and future.
And may be changed whenever and as often as desired.
If wanting a signature showing information about the bike in posted messages, it's easy to do. Here's how:

Am thinking the 1983 KZ750 4 cylinder models with LTD styling include:
KZ750-H4 chain drive
KZ750-F1 shaft drive
KZ750-N2 shaft drive "Spectre"

This link includes a free down-loadable service manual.
Scroll down to and download "The Bible."

Starters are likely the same for both chain and shaft drive KZ750 models.

Good Fortune! :)

It's your starter clutch. I have had starter clutches that tested fine and still be bad. I even had a brand new starter clutch assembly that was bad. If it sounds like a can full of rocks when you try and start it, it is going to be your starter clutch.

For future reference, since your bike is a 1983 KZ750 LTD with chain drive it can be identified as a KZ750-H4 when searching for parts, manuals, etc. Ed

Thanks for the search information. Is my starter clutch in the gear case? How could you tell your starter clutch was bad? Even the new one?

I resently had a wining sound and what had happend was the barrels in my sprag clutch were mard up . I think that you are experiencing the same issue. I ended up getting some good barrels and cleaned up the mating surface with a fine grit emery cloth and my starter has worked fine every since just make sure to check the caps the go on the springs that push against the barrels inside the rotor they have a black coating the tips if they are wore out it will tare up the barrels good luck

Because whenever I pressed the starter button the starter sounded like a can of rocks. It would turn the bike over but sounded terrible, that is the first symptoms of the starter clutch going bad. The next symptom is the starter slips while turning the engine over. Then it just stops working and spins without doing anything. With the new starter clutch that did not work I ended up replacing the rollers and springs in that one even though it came with new rollers and springs. That fixed the problem.
And yes your starter clutch is inside the case. You can replace it with the engine in the frame via the oil pan. I got pretty good at replacing it.
