Z750L3/KZ750R starter clutch
27 Oct 2012 10:30
Need to repair the starter clutch on my Z750.
I know it can be done with the engine still in the frame.
Is there a "how to" guide somewhere?
I know I can gat to it from the bottom, and that the clutch basket has to come of. But what else
Regards
Jesper

I just had to do this job on my 82' 750ltd. Yes, if time is a factor, you can do this with the engine in. Though reassembly is like playing Jenga backwards. Gravity becomes your enemy and you'll find yourself wishing you were born with a small extra arm growing out of your neck. (you'll see what I mean). So, you'll be removing; both covers, clutch assembly, exhaust, oil pan, secondary shaft cover plate, starter, oil pump; just to give you an idea of what you are getting into. It may sound daunting at first but as long as you remain methodical and pay attention to detail, it's not that painful. Do you have the Clymer book? There are also some helpful threads here. But if you want, since I'm in bed with the flu (blech) I have time to walk you through this step by step if you need. Also, is your bike a kz, zx? And what year please?

I suggest getting a Service Manual for your bike!
Also if you state KZ750L3 as the model, it is an in line 4 and not a twin, completely different to do the starter clutch.
Sprocket cover and stator cover, and pull the rotor to access the starter clutch.

Wow, I'm glad I checked back. Usually this site e-mails me on responces but whatever. Ok, cool bike! Pretty much the same set up as mine. So, have you removed anything yet or are you in the parts ordering phase? Other than the rebuild kit for your starter clutch, you'll be needing an oil pan gasket, clutch cover gasket, a couple of larger than normal sockets, an impact wrench, a torque wrench that reads low inches (harbor freight tools carries them cheap). Also, if you are due for an oil change, now will be the time to acquire the filter and oil. 1 more thing to consider; if you'ver heard a bunch of slack in your cam chain, you may want to look into a manual chain tensioner. I find them for about $50. If you need part contacts, just ask.

Have all the parts. Oil pan and sidecovers are off.
Next step is to fabricate a clinch holding tool, and then it looks like an easy fix
