GPZ 750 engine in KZ 750 swap was created by pinkiedog64
Hello all,
I am new here. I've had a 1980 KZ 1000 and now have a 1982 KZ 750 E model 4 cyl. I am very comfortable with working on engines and repairing things myself. There is a local guy selling an 84 GPZ 750 engine. My question is, besides from electronics and carb, does the GPZ 750 engine bolt right in where the stock engine does? Current engine needs a head gasket and could use a rebuild and I'm thinking $275 for a running used engine is more worth it than rebuilding the stock motor. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks, Stephan

I don't know of any differences. To my knowledge, the block and heads are the same, so all the mounts should be the same. Definitely check out Kawasaki.com for parts diagrams to see if it shows interchangeability for the two. Would just need to check the crankcase and heads. If they're shown as interchangeable, you're good to go. May also check output shafts on them to determine if you'll need an offset sprocket, but I'm thinking it should be a straightforward swap.

You will have to use the GPz750 offset sprocket to make the chain line up, unless you put the KZ750 trans in the GPz750 motor. Mounts all line up, but you may have to use washers on the front mounts since they are rubber mounted in the GPz750. If the alternator wires don't plug in the easiest fix is to use the KZ750 stator, rotor, and cover. Don't waste your time trying to wire up the GPz750 ignition, just swap in the 750E complete ignition.
I think that about covers it.

I run the Gpz ign. on my swap
Use the factory harness,
red wire from the igniter to key on 12 v.
Ground the black and the brown wire's your done.
Then the motor has the factory timing curve.

PREVIOUS KZs: 1980 KZ750H with 108,000 miles; 1980 KZ750E with 28,000 miles; and KZ750H street/cafe project, all sold a few years back.
This is what I do for fun, not for work. It is art, with a little engineering thrown in.

Not certain, but some of the later model 750 engines have a different clutch operating mechanism. You might need the connecting bits from the GPZ.

If you use the GPz750 Mikuni carbs you need to use the GPz750 throttle cable also.
