Exhaust stud removal
18 Sep 2012 01:59
What do you guy's use to remove exhaust studs? I tried the old 2 nut method and could not get 3 of my studs out without buggering my threads up. 2 of the 3 are brand new and I'd rather not destroy them. I thought about getting a stud remover but most of them have a knurled piece that dings up the shaft of the stud.

There should be an area in center thats not threaded you can grab with vise grips

I have usually had good luck with the 2 nuts locked against each other in the past. But if that is not working for you then you will have to try something else. I would give a good soaking with some good penetrate like Kroil oil. Let them soak for a day or so and then try the double nut again. If that still will not move the studs, then you may have to use a stud remover, and then trash the old studs and install new ones. v

Thanks guy's I ended up oiling and using vice-grips since the 2 nut method failed again, 2 of the new studs were bent once I got them out. Surely from overtightening since there were 2 copper gaskets in each exhaust port lol, once again the high dollar learning curve rears its ugly head. I also apparently put the keepers in backward with the lipped flange to the engine side...live and learn.
