Put a good healthy amount of blue locktite on the bolts. Make sure you spray out the holes with contact or brake clean. PAY ATTENTION here before you get sent on a while goose chase by people that never touched one of those bikes....geesh, I see this shit all the time on here....

Pull the spark plugs and see if they're oily. You may or may not have carb issues. Hopefully, all it needs is a good carb cleaning. If you have spark on all 4, that rules out the ignition.
Was the smoke blue or black?
J heads are prone to sinking valve guides. That can show up as blue smoke out the pipe. If it's continuous, it needs to be addressed. If it's only on start up, you can probably get by for a while.
If the exhaust is pulled, you can shine a light into the exhaust ports and clearly see if any guides are protruding down further than others. Same deal on the intake side with carbs removed but you'll have to use a mirror to see the 2 inside ports clearly.

Smoke is a blue/white. It may have been over filled.

Even if it was over filled it would have to leak into combustion chamber past a guide/valve or rings depending on when /how much it smokes.
