External Alternator? was created by der Hering
I love this look and have seen these block off plates for a 1000cc but nothing for a 650. Can I get rid of the magnet off the crank and do a setup like this without a lot of worrying about the bottom end coming out? I think the block off plate will be a simple project if there aren't any oil passages to worry about. Is it too much trouble for an aesthetic and none too practical look?

It looks cool, but generally I don't mod anything that my bike doesn't need.

That's one way to beef up the charging system

Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

I would say you would benefit more than just aesthetic. Aside from having choices on upgrading the charging system I see the clearance gained by removing the stator would be the biggest benefit IMHO. Having said that, I like the my bike as original as possible and that means with all the deficiency that they were designed with. But for people who like to mod their bikes to their tastes, I would think this would be a cool modification that will improve the bike.

It looks badazz and would open up the possibilities for increased charging output, but also looks like it would rip your pants right off if you moved your leg wrong.... pantless riding = police ticket.

Anyway, I like the additional cornering clearance and I am a sucker for a gilmer drive belt, but wouldn't it be easier to just reduce your electrical loads such as HID headlight, LED signals, etc?

I agree, if it makes you happy, thats good enough for me. :)
But if your bike puts out 14.5 volts at 5k rpm and you have a good batt. Whats the gain?
One slip and your chargings gone. Much tougher stock.
Throw a belt and you're screwed.
Im assuming this guy has a machine shop by looking at the bike or a best friend who does. Average Joe
building that will cost prob more than its worth.

I'll never tell someone not to do something they want to do, but just simply state some variables.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.
