You have lots of low cost options. I saw a slick mod someone did here. They took the reed covers off, tapped a 3/8 npt thread and used a stainless plug. I am gonna do that sometime, but for now I found $0.88 vinyl cane end caps that fit. Bonus, the caps are oil resistant, and they have not melted at all. I watched closely in the beginning. R

Because of the size of the chain tunnel any pressure will be equalized with the crankcase and vented via the crankcase breather

No. The reed cages pass air through a sealed passage to the exhaust ports. There is no connection to the camshaft area. The best solution is to tap and plug the passages, then do whatever you want with the reed cages. You can leave the pipes open and let them fill with crud, you can connect the pipes with a hose, you can cover the pipe ends with cane rubbers or replace the top of the reed cages with a smooth block off plate like the one from APE.
