The vacuum for the petcock is supplied at the carb, so deleting the clean air system will not affect it; gas flow won't change. Ed

I forgot to mention that in situations where the clean air system hoses are removed and the valve cover caps are cross connected with a length of hose, be sure to leave the reed valves in place, under the caps to prevent hot exhaust gasses traveling up to the hose.

ok so you connect the valve cover caps together with a hose. where do the gasses go?
do you poke a hole in the middle of the hose? or just connect a hose and clamps and thats it??
also check out my pic. what do you do with these two holes? its the airbox obviously

The upper hole can be blocked off.

That lower hole with the black tape is the breather for the engine case. It needs to be open. Since you have the airbox you should hook a tube from the breather into the airbox so gases from the breather will be sucked through the carbs. Many stock KZ's use a little "L" shaped tube like this that runs from the breather to the airbox. Ed

right on ed. no i actually have the hose for the engine case, its in the pic. kinda blends in with the airbox. i had the engine case blocked off just for while i had the airbox out and working on these carbs...so just block the top one off. GOT it. and i re-read and know not to put a hole in the hose connecting the reed valves. does doing all this cause more backfiring then?

Doesn't cause more backfiring (unless leaking where the connecting hose attaches).

+100 to this topic. I have a 1982 KZ750 CSR and was wondering what those hoses were coming out the top of the engine. I got the bike with no airbox and I'm running K&N pods but saw the 'reed valve' hose just hanging off the top of the engine and had no idea what it did. I'm going to run a hose across them and see how it runs.

I have the pods on and 145 main / 50 pilots with stock exhaust and I'm still getting some backfiring. I hope connecting the reed valves helps.

That may help, but take a look at the link below. It includes a video that shows very well how the CV carbs work. Running pods on CV carbs changes the dynamics of how the carbs work, so tuning them to run as well as the stock airbox for which they were engineered is not an easy task. Ed

Be sure to plug the hole on the air box that the air suction valve connects to. R

Would the ape covers for the kz750 fit on a 1982 CSR m1?
