I suspect there's a more difficult way to do this, but for the life of me I can't think of it.

Keep in mind - the more times you loosen and tighten those cam caps the more likely you are to strip the threads in that 30 year old aluminum head. You really are playing with fire. Ed

Yeah but really I don't know what to do. I'm looking at a chart someone scanned for me and emailed but it is showing with shim installed. I mean I guess I could just put it together with the 4 smallest shims and ,measure using the turning of the chain which makes more sense then I would know ... sounds better that way ..thanks for making me think outside the box.

I have dealt with stripped cap threads before,no fun. If someone will send you shims get four more thin ones, do all your measuring and then get what you need. I use the flat tool to hold down the bucket. No one mentions it here so maybe some have problems with it but it works well for me.

I did the measuring by putting in the shims I had ... and then measuring according to the chart from the manual that someone scanned and sent me.

I have now figured out that 1 and 2 exhaust and 2 intake are okay with the 2.40 shims .. and I need the following shims in the rest.

3 x 2.35
1 x 2.30
1 x 2.25

What a fun job (not) but at least im learning alot !!! hahahaah

As an update .. clearances have been done, carbs took a bath in an ultrasonic cleaner, new jets and needles, floats tested, topend gaskets replaced ... top end is great now. New CCT installed, it Idles nice... and sounds not too bad.

Cam timing is correct... timing advancer is correct , been tested according to manual.

Something is awful in the lower end tho... dont know what it is... I took a video.. wonder if you can hear it well, but its in the left side it seems... its LOUD.

.. could it be crank? Primary chain? I know these bikes are known for their solid bottom ends.. but something aint right.

My silly guess would be rod bearing, but slapping chain is possible too.

thats two votes for bad rod bearing... sounds better than finding a whole new bottom end !

Hell, finding a throttle cable was a pain in the arse... dont want to go looking for a new bottom end.
