If you don't set floats with a clear tube, they are guaranteed to be wrong.

Popping means too lean, fuel levels are probably low.

You mentioned that you bench synched the carbs. Please explain what you did. Ed

If they did not use the clear tube method to check the fuel level and then synch the carbs properly with the engine running both the fuel level and the carb synch may be off. As Bountyhunter said, setting the floats dry is not accurate, neither is "bench synching" the carbs. BTW, what do you mean by a "carb shop"? Ed

Petcocks get crappy with age and leak gas. Some have rebuild kits.

Popping is rich. KZ's have spark on every Top Dead Center. At the end of the exhaust stroke they will pop if there is still fuel left in the chamber to burn. I honestly think you just need to adjust your fuel mixture screws then sync the carbs, If you have pods and/or a open exhaust than you need to match your Jets accordingly.

You should still adjust your floats with the clear tube, but your floats being adjusted incorrectly does not govern how much fuel goes into the chamber at any given moment. It will either overflow out the carb, or choke the engine of fuel on heavy throttle. It doesn't govern constant mixture.

I am totally open to discussion if anyone disagrees with my logic.
