Hey guys, I've got a 1981 KZ750 and got into a minor accident a couple weeks ago and now I can't get it to start(It fell on the right side). Now, when I go to start it, all I get it a click from the solenoid, but when I jump it, it turns over but won't catch and run. (The battery was brand new but I guess the crash killed it if that's possible)
I've replaced all the spark plugs, replaced the main fuse, replaced the oil filter, and cleaned the battery connections but haven't gotten any results. Also, I've checked the solenoid by bypassing it, but it doesn't turn like that, so the solenoid should be fine.

Any ideas on what it may be?

Thanks,
Koki

**FIXED**
Turns out I'm blind. My alternator was bent to hell, so I replaced that and got my baby back up and running. Nevertheless, I learned a ton from you guys and tinkering around on my own.
Thank you!

It's possible that battery cell/plates where damaged. Did you check battery fluid levels. I'm not at home to check mine but does battery vent on right side? if so you might have lost enough fluid to effect voltage.
Damage to ignition cover, right hand controls or safety interlock switches?

I just bought a new battery to replace it since when I load tested it, it wasn't putting out enough juice. Once I have the new battery fully charged I'll test it out again.
I'll check all of the switches in a moment, thanks for the advice.

While you are checking switches check for bad grounds, the bike took a hit so it could be anything. Sounds like you have most covered but you never know

make sure one of the kill switches didn't accidentally get bumped on.

Guess what idiot did that after a car knocked me down....

Would also check and assure integrity of the ground connection where the negative battery cable attaches to rear of the engine.

Good Fortune! :)

Is there more than one kill switch? And where would it be?

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll check it out today.

I checked the negative connection to the back of the engine and that was fine.

So I took some starter fluid and sprayed it into my air filter to see if the pump was the problem, but the bike just turns over and wont catch. After spraying the fluid and trying to start the bike, there are occasional "putts" but nothing substantial. Is that a sign for another problem?

I have had that happen on my 650, fell over on he right side. Turned out to be a pinched wire from the kill swith. It grounded the kill switch so it would not allow the engine to run.

considering it doesn't fire , one has to wonder if there is juice to the plugs, just a guess but might it be possible that the ignition pickup sensors were jarred enough in the spill that they aren't functioning?

Would remove spark plug, leave attached to cap, hold its base grounded against the engine, ignition switch ON, and spin over the engine--- does the plug spark? And if so, are sparks weak orange color or fat blue color?

If no spark, what is voltage being actually received ay the coil primary terminal when the ignition switch is ON?

Answers to these questions will aid in diagnosing the cause for failure of combustion.

The cause is usually related to either or some combination of:
Compression;
Spark (or spark timing);
Fuel mixture (gasoline supply and air/fuel ratio).

Good Fortune! :)
