I have a `83 kz750 f1-ltd. It`s over heating, I put new rings in and a new piston on no.1 brought no. 1-4 to TDS and put the cams as per manual Z7EX level engine and IN level with engine with the 45th and the 46th pegs by the IN mark on the intake cam, both notches are pointing at the inside, The crankcase timing mark is dead on TDS, I`m about to give up, I`ve checked and rechecked every possible thing. How can I fix this mess? Also plugs are new and gaped at.07 THIS SUCKSSSSSS!

How do you know it is overheating? What are the symptoms/ scenario? Are you running it sitting still, with out a fan to blow air over the motor?

Hey motor head, Thanks for replying. I finished the job today it started right up, and then it started to smoke real bad and shut down after 2 min. I thougth the spark plug wires were going to melt. I put a timing gun on it at 1050 RPM and it was at F1 on the crankcase timing mark. I`m puzzled.......

Engines commonly smoke after reassembly, from oils and solvents. If it smoked out the exhaust, with a new set of rings, then the question is did it before? If not maybe you didn't get the oil ring correct, as they can be a bit of a pain.

O.K, I will bring you up to speed, It had a hole in the no. 1 piston, but the rest were fine, so I replaced the no. 1 piston and put new rings on all, put all new gaskets on and new plugs...

So the Smoke, is it from the external or the internal? Around the motor or out of the exhaust?
The hole in the piston, have you rebuilt your carbs? Get the things all nice and clean, set fuel height, check jet sizes etc? ignition timing should be set at Idle to the 1-4 F mark. But should be checked for proper advance also. There should be marks father up on the rotor, around the 40 to 45 degree area, they're just lines no letters/ numbers. These should be lining up when revved, above 3K RPM.

Anytime you hole a piston you need to to tear the engine apart to make sure nothing from the melted piston got into the case which it probably did. I have melted a few piston in my day and all of them ended up with metal in the case.

The smoke is coming off the engine, have not rebuilt the carbs, the engine gets hot just at idle then it shuts down, too hot, could it be too lean of a fuel mix?

Correct spark plugs per FSM?

F mark alignment (not T mark)?

Advancer stuck in closed position?

Good Fortune! :)
