The plate is set to maximum advance, which should make it hard to start but run OK-ish at higher rpm normally. Whether the timing is correct or not can only be determined by a strobe light.

That picture actually shows the Ignition plate rotated With the direction or crankshaft travel, this is to Retard the timing. It maybe that it is adjusted as far as the slots would go, and still be to far advanced. Use a timing light to find out where the timing is set. Do you have a manual for the bike/ bikes?

If the airbox is still on the bike, pull the top off, pull the filter out, put the lid back on and see what it does.

When timing, be sure to align the F mark with the case mark -- NOT the T mark.

Ignore the T mark when setting the ignition timing.

My bad  - of course it is! If timing should be set closer to full advance, the severely retarded timing will rob the engine of power at revs above 4000 rpm quite substantially.

Seems like the timing marks(T and F) are to the right of the case mark. and the ignition is moved all the way clockwise. Any suggestions? I might have seen something similar on another thread but couldn't find it. Thanks.
