want to buy KZ 750 but motor isn't running

There is a '81 KZ 750 LTD for sale near me that has been sitting for a while. The seller claims "...others told me that he (previous owner) unplugged some stuff so that the oil and gas will not mess up, so I guess plugging that stuff up and getting a key is all you would need." Upon discussion with my father, who is a lot more versed in carbureted engines then myself, was stumped by this. Any ideas what "stuff" was "unplugged" and if this could be a good project bike? Maybe it was stored correctly and he ran the bowls dry plugged the gas tank and drained and replaced with fresh oil. A new ignition is cheap enough to get. Does it have compression? It would be worth a trip to check it out. Seeing it in person will be best. These bikes are pretty durable, a carb and tank cleaning will usually get them running enough to check other components and systems. If it has good compression it will probably be a nice bike with some money and elbow grease. If you feel good about it offer him less since it does not run. If fuel was left in it a severe cleaning will be needed. Brakes should be checked too

I've only owned V-Twins in my life, give me some ideas of what I should look for in an inline 4, multi-carb engine that has been sitting and not started for a unknown time, I would greatly appreciate it!

• Does it turn over? (not seized)
• Does it have compression? (Compression tester)
• Where is it losing compression (Leak down tester)

With those answered, you're way ahead of the game. Carbs can be cleaned/rebuilt (about $120 for 4 rebuild kits) and synchronized pretty easily. Welcome to the sickness...

There are some Kz750 manuals floating around, too. Find one and download it - it will give you specs on things like minimum compression, etc.

Gauges are not original (or correct) so true milage unknown. The speedo should be a 80MPH and have warning lights at the bottom and the tach should have a built in volt meter. This is from a 80KZ750Hl

leave that one and wait ...others in way better shape with current tags,running...turn up for 8-1500 all the time


it will cost way more to fix and run a 500 bike than it does to spend 900-1100 and get a good/decent one
