Ed,

How soon from new did that one valve need attention? Every shim and bucket DOHC engine I've serviced has taken a few miles for the valves to settle, then they are good to go for 50-60K. I had a BMW K100 that I did the PDI on that had one intake valve that was always either a little to loose or too tight. It kept that up untill 80,000 miles, then it was fine. Every other K100 & K75 I serviced was good from the mile 1 untill about 80K.

I first checked the valve clearances at about 500 miles. That's when I noticed how close to the limit that 1 valve was. I don't know if it settled in that way or was that way when the motor was built. I will say I was really nervous about removing that cam to change a shim on my brand new engine, but everything went smoothly using the shop manual. Ed

Many, many moons ago a bloke told me the KZs would be fine with anything from 0.05 to 0.2 mm, or 0.002 to 0.008 in. Would you agree?

It has been my experience that these motors idle best when the valves are set to the max tolerance, especially the exhaust valves. The carbs are easier to sync. too.

Your answers are the most correct ones.

It's a myth that valves always get tighter. Some do, some don't. See it all the time.
