As the stated in the title It seems I have an oil leak that acts like an automatic chain lube system. Meaning my chain constantly shows signs of excessive oil on it. It actully drips on the garage floor after an ride of just a couple dozen miles.
My question is how much is involved in changing the oil seal on that there drive shaft that the sproket is connected to? Could it be coming from something else? I have searched this forum but didn't find the answer. Thanks in advance for your help.

My chain is always dripping wet with oil. Great for lube but I never had a bike oil the chain for me like this. When I had the chain guard off it would spray all over the tire, fender, brake light and my left foot. Now that the guard is back on it's a contained mess, but a mess nonetheless.

I guess what I am wondering is what needs to be taken apart to change the seal on the shaft that the front sprocket is attached to. Can the old oil seal be taken off and a new one put on while the engine is in the frame? Am I totally an idiot and there is someting else I am completely missing? I hope that clarifies my question.

Remove cover.
Remove sprocket.
Screw 2 woodscrews into seal one each side.
Use pliers to pull on screws to pull seal out.
Fit new seal.
Assemble.

Anyone know what they call that seal? I am on bike bandit and can't find it. Secondary shaft seal? I don't know.

Thanks you 650ed! It turns out that, apon furhter inspection, it is the shift shaft seal. looks like 92049B. Does that just pull out and the new one slide in? Should I drain the engine oil first? Thanks in advance.

I've never changed one, so I can't say how to do it, but it might be best to drain the oil - just in case. The part number for the piece labeled 92049B is shown as 92051-005. The good news is that it is still an active part, so any Kaw dealer can order it. Ronayers.com lists the price as $3.51. Ed

all those seals are pretty standard measures and available off the shelf in a good hydraulics supply shop.

while you are there would change the three of them to avoid further hassle in the future.

Thanks tuboguzzi, good advice. Do you think the cover needs to come off or came I pull the old one out and slide the new one in? That's what she said....!! :woohoo:

there's such a thing called seal puller would let you do it without pulling the cover off, easy with the mainshaft seal, less so with smaller ones.
